Watch this in the platform (3 min) — a walkthrough of creating a new calculation in Hydrus, including naming the calculation, selecting facilities, defining the reporting period, choosing scopes and Scope 2 methodology, and selecting source files and data sheets.

Creating a new calculation in Hydrus allows you to define which facilities, reporting periods, emissions scopes, and data sources should be included in an emissions calculation.

The setup process ensures that the calculation is based on the correct reporting boundary and methodology before the results are generated.

Start a new calculation

Go to the Calculations tab in Hydrus and select New Calculation.

This opens the calculation setup form, where you can define the main settings for the calculation.

Name the calculation and select facilities

Enter a clear name that makes the calculation easy to identify later.

The name should describe the purpose or reporting period of the calculation. For example, it could refer to the organization, reporting year, business unit, or reporting cycle.

Next, review the available facilities and select the locations that should be included.

Only data associated with the selected facilities will be included in the calculation.

Choose the reporting period

Select the period that the calculation should cover.

Hydrus allows you to define the reporting period in several ways:

  • Fiscal year
  • Quarter
  • Custom date range

For example, you can select the full 2025 fiscal year, a specific quarter within 2025, or a custom period that matches your reporting requirements.

The selected period determines which activity data is included in the calculation.

Select the emissions scopes

Choose which emissions scopes should be included.

Depending on the purpose of the calculation, you can select:

  • Scope 1
  • Scope 2
  • Scope 3

You can include one scope or multiple scopes in the same calculation.

Selecting the relevant scopes ensures that the calculation includes only the emissions categories required for that reporting exercise.

Choose the Scope 2 methodology

If Scope 2 is included, select the methodology that should be used.

Hydrus supports:

  • Location-based reporting
  • Market-based reporting
  • Dual reporting

The location-based method calculates emissions using factors that represent the electricity grid where consumption occurs.

The market-based method uses information related to the electricity products or contractual instruments purchased by the organization, where applicable.

If dual reporting is selected, both methods are available within the calculation. Users can switch between the location-based and market-based views when reviewing results.

Select source files and data sheets

After completing the main calculation settings, select Next.

The next step allows you to choose the source files and data sheets that should provide the activity data for the calculation.

Review the available sources and select the ones that contain the relevant data for the facilities, period, and scopes you have chosen.

Selecting the correct sources helps ensure that the calculation uses the intended reporting data.

Create and open the calculation

After reviewing the selected data sources, click Create and Open.

Hydrus will create the calculation using the selected:

  • Facilities
  • Reporting period
  • Emissions scopes
  • Scope 2 methodology
  • Source files
  • Data sheets

The calculation will then open so that you can review the results and continue with analysis or reporting.

Review the setup before creating the calculation

Before finalizing a calculation, confirm that the selected settings match the reporting requirement.

Check that the correct facilities, reporting period, scopes, methodology, and data sources have been selected.

A clearly defined calculation setup helps ensure that the resulting emissions figures are based on the intended reporting boundary and source data.
